Financial Services

Sathapana Bank In the mid-2000s, Chairman Chang-Woo Han paid visits to several countries in Southeast Asia to explore new business opportunities as well as to help the economy and people of a chosen country prosper. Chairman Han was particularly interested in Cambodia, as he felt that the country had great potential after experiencing difficult times during its civil war. Chairman Chang-Woo Han found a similar scene to the one he experienced growing up in Japan in the 1950s. Tokyo was little more than a provincial town only 140 years ago. Even harder to imagine is how it was devastated by one of the century’s worst earthquakes in 1923, and how afterward it would feel the effect of a disastrous war. Despite all of these hardships, the city is a success story and has grown and prospered into one of the world’s most exciting commercial hubs.

We believe that, together with the country of Cambodia and its citizens, we can overcome difficulty with a spirit of hunger and challenge and grow together. The financial business at MARUHAN began with our desire to help make this country even better.
This is why Chairman Chang-Woo Han established MARUHAN Japan Bank Plc. in May 2008, the first Japanese-owned commercial bank in Cambodia, which aimed to contribute to the development and growth of Cambodia through providing bank services and investment from Japan.

Sathapana Bank In December 2012, MARUHAN Japan Bank Plc. took an opportunity to acquire SATHAPANA Limited, a leading microfinance institution in Cambodia. MARUHAN Japan Bank Plc. was focused on providing commercial banking products and services, aiming to expand its operations nationwide, while SATHAPANA Limited was offering micro financial products and services to grass-roots lending clients nationwide and looking to become a full-service commercial bank. Chairman Han considered the situation, recognizing the similar mutual objectives and the strong potential to complement each other. His conclusion was to merge MARUHAN Japan Bank Plc. and SATHAPANA Limited.

Cambodia had no history of financial mergers, and after consultation with the National Bank of Cambodia and governmental regulatory bodies, SATHAPANA Bank Plc. was established in April 2016. The newly merged commercial bank was formed to provide reliable banking services as the “People’s Bank” of Cambodia, empowering entrepreneurs to create jobs and improve Cambodian business and living standards through sustainable access to financial services.
